Peace & Love Washboard
Peace and Love has created a wash board that makes it possible for community members to do laundry without hurting their fingers or their back, and more quickly. The washboard is made from local wood and other materials, and is easy to assemble: it can be produced rapidly with instruction.
- Washboard cost is ~$2.50
- Plastic washboard (purchased in regional market) is ~$4.00
- Amount of items that can be washed is the same
- Plastic washboard is more durable, but lacks replacement parts.
Imminent Roadblocks: This business has a marketing and finance model problem. Members of the design team have found it hard to market the product and grow sales because of an imported, regionally available substitute. From a brief market survey within the community and surrounding communities, there is interest in the product at the right price point, but selling the product requires some education.
An area where innovation would be key here is to think about other assets or capacities that could cut down on the price of the product, or possible financial models that would make it more appealing either to supply or demand. Additionally, this design team would benefit from marketing innovation as the product is not well-known nor widely advertised.
